Weaving Masterclass with Master Weaver Regina Pilawuk Wilson

  • The Cutaway 1 Merriman Street Barangaroo, NSW, 2000 Australia (map)

Join Regina Pilawuk Wilson, a master fibre weaver from Durrmu Arts in Peppimenarti, Northern Territory, for a unique hands-on weaving masterclass.

Participants will learn traditional weaving techniques using merrepen (sand palm), a plant harvested on Country by the Ngan’gikurrungurr people. The palm fronds are carefully collected and stripped into fine natural fibres, which are often naturally dyed using bush plants, roots and berries to create vibrant colours including yellow, red, black, orange, purple and pink. Regina will provide the pre-prepared and naturally dyed fibres for the workshop.

Regina Pilawuk Wilson is a Ngan’gikurrungurr woman from the Daly River region of the Northern Territory and one of Australia’s most respected fibre artists. A celebrated artist and passionate advocate for Durrmu Arts and the broader Indigenous arts sector, Regina has played a significant role in sustaining and sharing the cultural traditions of her community.

Her weaving practice is deeply connected to Peppimenarti, a significant dreaming site for the Ngan’gikurrungurr language group and the permanent settlement of the Ngan’gikurrungurr people since 1973. The knowledge and skills Regina shares today were passed down through generations, inherited from her mother and grandmother and carried forward through her own distinctive artistic practice.
